Cheep, Cheep

It was a busy week last week in the chick hatchery. We began to see holes, and pecking from the egg tooth on several eggs on Monday. After about 24 hours at chick emerged on Tuesday.
A newborn chick- still wet!
The following day, we had more chicks !
Everyone had a chance to observe the chicks during the week.

They are now off to a farm to have a free range life.

4 Winds Science- Life Cycle of Frogs

Many thanks to our 4 Winds parent volunteers, Emma, Bhavna and Lead Teacher, Angela. We have had monthly lessons this year and have learned about adaptations in nature. This month we learned about frogs. We saw a puppet show, looked at live tadpoles, made mask, and learned that frogs can jump 17 times the length of their body! Many kids thought they could do that too, but realized it was quite a distance.

Froggy tongues

Real tadpoles....borrowed from Hubbard Park.

This is what 17 kindergarten body lengths looks like!
Please let me know if you would be interested in helping with 4 Winds in first grade. Monthly trainings are offered on Wednesdays. Lessons can be scheduled to meet your needs.

A Surprise

Since incubation for chick eggs is 21 days, we were very surprised to hear peeping sounds late Friday afternoon. Upon closer inspection, we noticed one egg with a small crack beginning. Our first hatch took place some time that evening.

A perfectly healthy, strong chick was found on Saturday morning. You see, some of our fertilized eggs had apparently been naturally incubated by a mother hen at some point before they arrived in our incubator. We look forward to the arrival of more chicks around May 22, and will keep you posted.

Walking to MHS for Lettuce Planting

On the way to MHS, we stopped by the State House for a photo with the legislators.

We saw Amy Koch at the greenhouse, and sang Happy Birthday to her, on her 17th birthday.

Checking out the lettuce grown by older kids.

Picking and tasting some lettuce

Which one is spicy?

Learning how to plant lettuce seedlings.

Meeting Mr. Bunting as we get some water To drink from Montpelier High School.

Many thanks to Terri and Zephyr for helping with this warm walking trip!

Life Cycles- Chicks

Our next kindergarten theme explores life cycles, and the needs of living things. We are incubating some eggs, and learning about the growth of chicks, and other Oviparous creatures. Our eggs went into the incubator in the library( the nursery) on May 2nd. Typical gestation for chickens is 21 days. We will turn the eggs 3 times daily, and will inquire along the way!

Eggs are marked on each side, so we can keep track of turns.
