Valeshka is interested in education, and is coming to work with our classs to incorporate drama into our literacy studies. Valeshka will spend this semester helping small group learn to read plays, learn parts, create costumes, and perform for small groups. Each child will have an apportunity to work with Valeshka on a play this semester. We will make sure to video these performances too! We are so lucky to have this extra help from a CBL ( Community Based Learning) student. Thanks Valeshka, Matt McLean and Montpelier High School.

Table of Contents

We are learning about the features of nonfiction books.. Today we learned about "Table of Contents". Fourth graders, Aidan and Zeke, came to show us how "Table of Contents" work. They described them as "maps of the book." First graders then created their own "Table of Contents" for their nonfiction books. Aidan and Zeke can't wait to come back to see finished books in a week or so....

NAP/ECO in Hubbard Park on Monday, March 12th

Our next Nature Adventure/ECO outing in Hubbard Park is this Monday, 3/12. We will be merging with Mrs. Wrigley's  class for a ¾ day learning experience. (9 a.m. – 12:40 p.m.) and returning to school in time for music class with Ms. Sales.
We will be much of the day outside, and we anticipate getting wet from damp forest materials and some mud. Please be sure your child is prepared for the outdoors with the following:

Boots
Snow Pants/Rain Pants (we have extras of both at school)
Wool socks
A warm coat (wear a sweatshirt or fleece underneath for layering)
Hat
Mittens
Water Bottle

We will be bringing backpacks with lunches from home (children who usually eat school lunch will receive a bag school lunch). Chaperones are welcome for the entire outing, or even a portion. Please let us know if you are planning to join us for this adventure. We will be in a variety of locations, with a variety of stations to support learning about Force and Motion, and Changes in States of Matter.

Ways to help:

Donate firewood
Walk with the class
Help with a group
Be a lunch angel
Bring extra water
Tend the fire

Thanks for all you do to support this outdoor learning experience!

BRRRR

Due to the chilly weather, we will change the time frame of our outdoor experience for Monday. The plan is to leave Union at 10:30, and return by 2:00. If we have cold kids, we will head back to school earlier. Our goal is to learn outside, not to have frozen first graders!!!

100 Days of First Grade

What an exciting day! We welcomed all of the stuffed animal friends to our classroom, and reminded them of the expectations in first grade. We also read 100 books as a class. Our guest reader, Sarah Kinter, shared a book called " One Green Apple". Sarah is a volunteer with "Reading to End Racism."

100 Hoots by Day 100

The class is working to earn 100 hoots by Wednesday- the 100th day of first grade. If the goal is met, we will celebrate with a "Pajama and Stuffed Animal Day". Please plan on having your child wear PJ's to school on Wednesday. It is looking like they will meet their goal. By 2:30 today there were over 40 hoots in our class "nest."
