Sun and Shadows

Many thanks to Angela and Bhavna for their efforts to teach the first 4 Winds  science lesson of the year. The lesson was called "Sun and Shadows" . We enjoyed learning about the rotation of the Earth, and the revolutions of the Earth. We also used flashlights to simulate sunshine, and to see how shadows change. This video was intriguing as first graders attempted to use their hands to make shadows too!

Using Community Paper, like Eric Carle

We have been using Eric Carle books throughout our insect unit, to discover the unique characteristics of insects. We also learned about Eric Carle's method of creating his own paper, and his effort to make paper "more than paper." we set out to mimic his style of paper making, by creating our own painted paper, which we called "Community Paper".

We then began to really study the collage technique used by Eric Carle. Each first grader was able to look carefully at an Eric Carle book, and to find something interesting to share with classmates. this literature study was captivating, and lasted for about 30 minutes!

Each student then set off to create their own insect in this collage style. We had a checklist nearby, to help remember the parts of an insect.
Beatiful insects were created, and each student also named their artwork! These pieces will be hanging outside the classroom for further viewing!

A Silly Class Picture Too!

We will make sure to have another class photo taken on the makeup day in early November, since we were missing a few friends on this day.Who knows, maybe the photographer will ask for a silly pose too!

An Awesome Open House

It was great to see so many families at Open House. First graders were so excited to share their "mini me's" with you. They also did a GREAT job of sharing their learning, and their goals for the year. If you were unable to sign up for a conference, please look for a sheet in your child's folder with some available times. I look forward to talking with you more at conference times on October 14th, and 15th. Please remember that there is NO SCHOOL on conference days, and your child is expected to be at the conference too.

CARES

We had an assembly to create community, learn the names of new staff, and to reinforce the meaning of CARES,  the  acronym for our school wide  behavioral expectations.
We will be working on all five of these expectations;  Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy and Self-Control. In October, we will have a special focus on Cooperation!  Screech appeared at the assembly, and announced an incentive of a school-wide popcorn party for classes that meet their class set goals! We are confident that our class will be able to reach it's goal by mid October.
