The First Day!
September 2, 2014
Dear Kindergarten Families,
We also read a story, Welcome to Kindergarten, by Anne Rockwell, got to know our new friends, and explored some math learning tools.
The children met their music teacher, Ms. O’Hara, and listened to the classic story by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
At the end of the day, we explored “Magic Playdough”. Check out our class blog for some photos of the magic. http://www.mrskochsnews.blogspot.com
Here are some questions to help start a conversation with your child about their first day of kindergarten:
- Tell me about what you did in music class today.
- What do you do when you hear Mrs. Koch ring the chime?
- What is the name of one of your classmates?
- What did you play on the playground?
- Tell me about the ways you played and learned in the classroom.
“The More We Get Together”
The more we get together
Together, together
The more we get together
The happier we'll be
Cause your friends are my friends
And my friends are your friends
The more we get together
The happier we'll be

Welcome to Kindergarten
Yay! You found our class blog!
I will use this blog to update families of class happenings throughout the year. I have left some postings from the last k-1 looping class, to give you an opportunity to explore the types of adventures you can look forward to.
I hope you have received this letter already:
Welcome to kindergarten! My name is Mrs. Koch, and I will be your kindergarten teacher. I live in Montpelier with my husband and two daughters. I also have a dog named Shadow. Can you guess what color he is?
I have been busy getting ready for school to start, and I just can’t wait to meet you .We will have a kindergarten play date on Monday, August 25th from 4:30-5:30 on the playground. We are also having an Open House for you and your family in our classroom on August 28th, from 3:30-4:30.
Have you ever looked closely at a caterpillar, chrysalis or butterfly? We will start the year studying the life cycle of the butterfly and there are so many types here in Montpelier. Keep an eye open for caterpillars of these species and bring one to school if you find it!

Yearbooks still available!
Yearbooks are still available. For the modest price of $12.50, you can give your child years and years of enjoyable reminiscing. And maybe some entertaining embarrassment when they get to their 30s and 40s!
Please bring cash, or a check payable to Union Elementary School, to the Main Office or to Melissa Parker's room. Melissa and her students ran the yearbook prep this year as hands-on, real-life service project. Thanks, Melissa's Class!

Maggie's Last Day
We had a "surprise " party to thank our special volunteer from Montpelier High School. Maggie Gordon has come to our classroom each Tuesday and Thursday to help with Writer's workshop. Maggie is especially interested in world cultures and wanted to see what it was like to work in a primary classroom with many ELL students. She has been a great asset to our community in Room 7 and we will really miss her. Maggie is a lifeguard at the Montpelier pool and will be teaching lessons this summer, so perhaps the kids will get a chance to say hello in the summer months. Thanks so much Maggie!

Library News
A note from Mrs. Frey, our UES
Librarian:
It's that time of year - We're hoping
to start the big book return!
Teachers will be receiving a class
notice that lists students and the books they have checked out according
to our records. If a book truly is lost, it can be replaced by
1) paying for the replacement or 2) giving UES Library a copy of
the book (can be used as long as in good shape)
If students think they have returned
books, have questions or want to "work off" the cost of the book,
teachers will allow them to come to the library to work it out.
Please e-mail Mrs. Frey if you have
questions or need further information.
