Word Study

First grade word study has several elements. As a class, we learn spelling features through Fundations lessons. This week, we are learning about the glued sound "all" and the letters that usually get doubled at the end of words f,l,s. Some words we have been practicing together include, miss, off, boss, fill, etc.

In small groups, children are learning to sort words at their individual spelling levels. Some groups are working on letter sounds, some on digraphs, and others are working on vowel sounds. You should be getting these words each week to practice at home too.

In class, we have taken on the challenge of learning to spell longer, trickier words. We are collecting such words, and are trying to incorporate them in writing too.

Here is a glimpse of our "interesting words" board.
